Pico Viejo Summit Hike in Teide National Park

Teide National Park is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the Canary Islands, drawing millions of visitors each year. Its vast and varied landscapes make it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with a wide range of hiking trails to suit every adventure level. If you’re short on time but still want to experience one of the park's most spectacular hikes, then the Pico Viejo volcano should be at the top of your list.

Why Choose Pico Viejo?

If you’ve already explored the famous Montaña Guajara or even the mighty Pico del Teide, you know that those hikes require permits, and the routes can be challenging. But here’s the good news: Hiking to the summit of Pico Viejo doesn’t require a permit. However, don't be fooled—it’s no walk in the park. This 4-hour hike, with an elevation gain of 1,100 meters, is a true test of endurance, offering a rewarding experience for those ready to put in the effort.

Volcano Teide and Pico Viejo

Two Routes, One Epic Adventure

There are two main trails to reach the summit of Pico Viejo, and both offer unique experiences:

1. Mirador Narices del Teide Trail

The most scenic option starts at Mirador Narices del Teide. This trail will take you through breathtaking landscapes, but be prepared for a tough climb, especially a section of volcanic sand that will really challenge your strength. As you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views and the sight of small craters formed during the 1798 eruption when this volcano surprised everyone by spewing lava down its slopes.

2. Roques de García Trail

If you’re looking for a more manageable route, I highly recommend starting from Roques de García. Arrive early to secure parking and make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks, as this trail takes a full 7 hours for the ascent and descent. When I hiked it, I encountered no more than 10 people, making it an ideal choice for those seeking some peace and solitude.

The Summit: A Crater Like No Other

Upon reaching the top of Pico Viejo, you’ll be greeted by an impressive crater, 800 meters in diameter and with a significant depth. While the crater is a sight to behold, don’t even think about venturing to the bottom—getting out will be nearly impossible! Be sure to continue on to the west side of the volcano, where you’ll be treated to awe-inspiring views of the nearby islands of La Gomera and La Palma.

For the Adventurous: Summit Teide from Pico Viejo

For those who want even more adventure, there’s a trail that leads from Pico Viejo to the summit of Teide, the highest peak in Spain. This additional 2-hour trek requires careful planning and, yes, permits are required for this part of the route. Assess your fitness levels and readiness before continuing on this extension.

A Sunrise to Remember

If you’re an early riser and up for a challenge, consider hiking up Pico Viejo in time for the sunrise. For the most magical experience, plan to begin your hike around 2 AM, depending on the season. Unlike the popular night ascent of Teide, no extra permits are needed for this route. At 3,100 meters, you’ll witness an unforgettable sight: the shadow of Teide casting a massive triangle over the ocean as the sun rises. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Conclusion

Whether you're looking for a challenging hike or a serene adventure through otherworldly landscapes, Teide National Park offers an unforgettable experience. Pico Viejo is perfect for those seeking an accessible yet spectacular hiking journey with minimal logistics. And for the more adventurous, catching the sunrise at the summit of Pico Viejo will make your trip to the Canary Islands one you’ll always remember.
